Six people are at a party. Prove that there must exist at least 3 people who all know each other, OR at least 3 people none of whom know each other. You cannot avoid one or the other. Now generalise: what is the minimum number of people needed to guarantee 4 mutual friends OR 4 mutual strangers? This is the Ramsey number R(4,4).
